Russell T. Davies is ready for a gay Marvel’s superhero!

During the PinkNews Awards in London last Wednesday night the Queer as Folk creator was asked by BANG Showbiz if he could ever see himself as a part of the Marvel Universe. Davies responded saying that he would love to but under one condition: if he were allowed to write a script with a gay superhero.

”If they want to make a gay superhero: properly gay, not just a nice little character in the background, I would be there. I could write it, I could write it like a demon,” he said. We would like to see it!

Davies statement comes in an increasing push for LGBTQ+ visibility within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In July it was revealed that Valkyrie (played by Tessa Thompson) would be the franchises first openly LGBTQ+ superhero in the upcoming Thor: Love And Thunder. In that film she will search for her queen.

In an interview with Variety last September, Kristen Stewart hinted at wanting to play a gay superhero as well, in which her Seberg co-star and Marvel’s veteran Anthony Mackie suggested she portray ‘the gay, female Captain America.”

Last year Marvel’s Studio president, Kevin Feige, stated that the studio was “working on bringing an LGBTQ+ character into their cinematic universe in 2020’sThe Eternals,” which Feige confirmed in August at D23 Expo in California to feature a gay father.

“He’s married, he’s got a family, and that is just part of who he is,” he said.

Davies accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award during the event in which he condemned Donald Trump and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson for their attacks on the LGBTQ+ community.
