And some of your favorite queens are returning for it.
RuPaul's Drag RacerupaulMikelle StreetIn season seven of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Ginger Minj made a joke that doesn’t go over well. In a skit written by the queens, the contestant called Drag U— the show’s short-lived spinoff where Ru madeover regular women — a “rough spot.” It was clear that Minj intended for people to laugh, but RuPaul later revealed that it was actually one of her favorite projects to do.
Now four years after the on-camera snub, Ru gets the last laugh as she prepares to bring back the show — in spirit.
Today, VH1 has announced the launch ofRuPaul’s Celebrity Drag Race, a four-episode show featuring “12 sickening celebrities.” With the help of some of our favorite Ru girls, the stars will undergo a drag transformation in a bid to win money for a charity of their choice, as well as the title of “America’s Next Celebrity Drag Superstar.”
So many Ru titles, so little time! Though the list of celebrities hasn’t been released, we don’t doubt that more than a few women will be involved.
“Doing drag does not change who you are, it reveals who you are,” Ru said in a statement having announced the spinoff at Vanity Fair’s New Establishment Summit. “I can’t wait for the world to see what happens when our celebrity contestants get all up in drags!” An airdate for the show has not been announced yet.
Mama Ru has called in the heavy hitters to help with the transformations: Alyssa Edwards, Asia O’Hara, Bob the Drag Queen, Kim Chi, Monet X Change, Monique Heart, Nina West, Trinity the Tuck, Trixie Mattel, and Vanessa Vanjie Mateo. Sounds like it’s going to be a good time.
Obviously this comes at quite the busy time in the ever-expanding Drag Race Universe. We are a few episodes into the debut season of RuPaul’s Drag Race U.K.and are expecting new seasons of the U.S. version (as well as All Stars) next year. Then there’s Drag Race Thailand and The Switch. Plus, somewhere along the line, we can expect the debut of Canada’s Drag Raceand a version in Australia.
While this new show doesn’t seem as if it’s going to be rolled out in as grand (or as extended) of a production, we don’t doubt that RuPaul’s Celebrity Drag Race will be angling for a renewal.
