“New York” is in the mothafucking house yet again, this time with some encouraging words of support for LGBTQ+ people.

The self-proclaimed HBIC, who became an instant fan favorite from her time on VH1’s Flavor of Love and her namesake spinoff I Love New York, has since appeared on various other reality shows and spinoffs, including U.K. Celebrity Big Brother. She even served as a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race earlier this year.

Pollard’s 15 minutes of fame have extended into a 13-year reign as a reality TV queen, as well as acting roles. In an interview with U.K. publication GayTimes, Pollard dished about the new seasons of her VH1 digital series Brunch With Tiffany  — on which Monet X Change and Jasmine Masters both appear — and the special affinity she has for her LGBTQ+ fans.

“The community has always shown me love and I think that we connect on levels that are just unspoken because – and a lot of people don’t know this – I was bullied throughout high school,” Pollard said. “We connect on that level because we know how it is to be ridiculed for being yourself. You can’t apologize for being yourself because that’s all you know how to be.”

Pollard also chatted up another creative way she connects with LGBTQ+ fans, in an art form that both she and many people in the community engage as needed, for entertainment or not: Reading.

While giving a brief master class, Pollard said, “I think first of all, you have to confront yourself, know who you are and know your truth. If you’re violated to the degree where somebody has hurt you, basically let them know what they have done to you, and do it in a way where you’re not getting too loud that they can’t hear you, but loud enough so they can hear you.”

“Make sure you don’t leave anything out, don’t let your emotions get the best of you,” she added. “Don’t start crying! Stay in your ground, let it all out and make sure that they respect that read.”

Pollard said she hopes her public life will encourage other people to live out loud and remain grounded in who they really are.

“I don’t understand it but I do understand it because I think that the main ingredient is being true to yourself and not worrying,” she said. “I just let life unfold and it will always give me the best hand.”
