You may remember them, having gone viral weeks ago for handing out rainbow masks to fight the pandemic and homophobia.
Gay KissWorld NewssexDonald PadgettAgainst a backdrop of rising intolerance in their home country, a gay couple made history when they were shown getting intimate in a television commercial that appeared on Polish TV, according to Gay Star News. The well-known YouTubers, Jakub and Dawid Mycek-Kwiecinski, appeared in an advertisement for Durex condoms and were the first same-sex couple to appear in a national television commercial.
The Durex commercial shows three couples in the process of getting intimate. The Mycek-Kwiecinskis appear giving themselves haircuts, slowly embracing, and moving in for a kiss. One is shown reaching for a condom after the pair embraces. The couple told GSN the campaign will air in Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Lithuania.
This is not the first time the couple has made the news. Jakub had worked as a presenter on the national television network TVP for nine years. He was summarily fired for being gay after TVP hired Jacek Kurski, a former member of the conservative political party Law and Justice, to become the company’s president.
During the worst of the global pandemic, Jakub and Dawid produced and distributed hundreds of free rainbow-hued facemasks. They documented their philanthropy in a YouTube video, highlighting the love and appreciation they received for the Pride-themed personal protective equipment. The positive response was heartwarming and, frankly, surprising, considering how hostile Poland has historically (and recently) been towards LGBTQ+ people and queer equality.
The conservative Law and Justice Party (PiS) won the 2019 general elections in Poland with the help of a homophobic social platform. Many cities and districts have called themselves “LGBT-Free zones” and the legislature is currently considering a bill that would equate LGBTQ+ persons to pedophiles. The law would punish anyone who “promotes or approves sexual intercourse or other sexual activity by a minor” with up to three years in prison. The proposal, along with a similar “Stop Abortion” bill under consideration, received international condemnation.
