Clearly, a lesbian Christmas rom-com was long overdue.

Hulu recently announced that Happiest Season broke records by becoming the most-watched film across all acquired and Hulu Original films during an opening weekend.

Not to mention, the Clea DuVall-directed project, which stars Kristen Stewart, Mackenzie Davis, Alison Brie, Audrey Plaza, and Dan Levy, had the highest engagement with Hulu subscribers and even brought in a number of new customers. The feature became the most-talked about Hulu Original film to date on Twitter. Such big numbers might lead some to believe that it's a shoe-in for a sequel. But what does DuVall think about the idea?

"I would love to do a sequel,"DuVall told Variety. "I mean, I have a couple of ideas. We all had such a great time making the movie that we were talking about it then. But it was also just like, who knew if anybody would care about the movie or not? So I definitely am more than open to it."

It’s clear that Hulu is having a moment though. Sarah Paulson’s latest film, Run, was Hulu’s most watched movie in history during its opening weekend.

But this has been a bit of a trend recently with LGBTQ+ leads bringing in big numbers.

Schitt’s Creek, starring Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Annie Murphy, Emily Hampshire, and Eugene Levy, not only dominated the Emmy Awards with a historic nine award sweep, but it also shot to number one on Nielsen’s list of top 10 most-streamed shows in the U.S. during the week of September 28. It then stayed there for another week.

Ryan Murphy's Ratched, which also stars Sarah Paulson, broke records for Netflix. It became the "biggest original season 1" of 2020 when it debuted earlier this year. In it, Paulson plays a queer (terrifying) nurse.

Though Queen's Gambit only winks at the queerness of its lead character (honestly, it was a blink if you miss it scene that sealed the deal) the Netflix show became the streamer's biggest scripted limited-series in history. By extenstion it also boosted sales of chess sets and chess books according to reports
