Kate Kane is finally coming back, but she’s not putting the cowl back on.

The CW announced which actor has been cast to fill Ruby Rose’s role a year after the original star of Batwoman left the show. British actress Wallis Day is joining the cast of Batwoman as Kate Kane, the same character Rose played, after surviving a near-fatal accident.

Day won’t be donning the iconic cape and cowl though, Javicia Leslie’s Ryan Wilder will still be the only one behind the mask. Day will play Kane without the title of Batwoman, in her life after passing on the mantle.

According to Deadline, the second half of this current season of Batwoman will explain where Kane has been and how it will affect the show going forward. In the latest episode, it’s revealed that Kane is alive, but being held hostage and covered in bandages due to injuries she sustained in a crash.

Day has never publicly stated her sexuality, but she is the first actor who isn’t an out queer woman to play the character in live action. The show has previously stated that they believe it is important to cast queer actors in the role of one of the most iconic lesbian superheroes of all time. Rose is a lesbian and Leslie is bisexual.

At the time Rose left the show, Warner Bros, Berlanti Productions, and the CW released a joint statement saying "the studio and network are firmly committed to Batwoman’s second season and long-term future, and we — along with the show’s talented creative team — look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months,"

Today she tweeted about her excitement for the role. “Super excited to finally announce I’m joining the cast of Batwoman,” Day tweeted. “I’m sure you can imagine how much this means to me and how incredible it’s been working on the show so far. Everyone’s made me feel so welcome and it’s amazing being back home with my DC family.”

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Caroline Dries, said that Wallis had been on their radar for a while. “I believe she auditioned for Ryan Wilder.  So when I met her via Zoom audition —those super awkward Zoom auditions — she was super cool and had great swagger and poise, and I just really liked her,” Dries said. “At the same time, I believe there was sort of like this internet campaign — I don't know how widespread it was, but it got my attention — that Wallis should be Kate Kane, and she does sort of look a lot like Kate Kane, so it drew me to her.”

Day has been in the DCEU before, playing bisexual character Nyssa Vex on the Syfy show Krypton. Last year when a fan said she’d be a great choice to recast the role of Batwoman, she replied “sounds like a dream job!!!” Looks like dreams come true.

Rose left the show after just one season. She cited several reasons for leaving, including an injury sustained while filming, a grueling schedule, and changes in her life goals. Javicia Leslie was cast as the first Black Batwoman shortly after and has been killing it this season.
