In a new interview with Glamour, bisexual and nonbinary actor Sara Ramirez opened up about their own sexual and gender journey, how it’s impacted the characters they play, and how they keep pushing representation forward.
Oh, and they also said they’d love to return to Grey’s Anatomy one day!
While most of the interview was about Ramirez’ new role in the HBO Max Sex and the City revival And Just Like That, and their journey in Hollywood as a nonbinary and bisexual person, Glamour also asked some questions about their iconic role on Grey’s Anatomy.
When asked if they’d ever return to the role of Dr. Callie Torres, they replied “absolutely.” They continued: “If the stars align in a way that makes it make sense, absolutely. I love my Grey’s Anatomy family.”
They also talked about the current nonbinary and trans represetnation on the show (including E.R. Fightmaster as the show’s first nonbinary doctor). “I’m so proud of them for introducing trans characters and nonbinary characters,” Ramirez said. “It’s a beautiful universe that they’ve created over there, and I’m so grateful that I got to be a part of it.”
Finally, they speculated on what they think Callie is doing now. “I imagine that Callie is in New York. I’m not really sure what else is going on for Dr. Callie Torres, but I’m just as curious as the fans are,” they said. “I think it would be really exciting to see what Dr. Callie Torres is doing these days. So yeah, I’m definitely open to it. I would love to see it.”
So would we! Maybe when Callie’s in New York, she could bump into nonbinary comedian and podcaster Che Diaz. I think the two would get along great.
Earlier in the interview, Ramirez also revealed that they initially encouraged the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, to explore Callie’s bisexuality. She remembers telling Rhimes that she’d never seen a bi character on TV who was played “in a way that embraces bisexuality.”
They also say that at the time, the show was thinking of making another regular character queer, and when that didn’t work out, Ramirez suggested that Callie explore her bisexuality instead. And Rhimes loved the idea.
For now, Ramirez returning to Grey’s Anatomy is just a wish, but if you want to watch the Out100 cover star now, you can check out new episodes of And Just Like That on Thursdays on HBO Max!
