But is it too little, too late?
TVEntertainmentMey RudeDoctor Who fans have been waiting a long time for this, but for many, the development left them unsatisfied.
Ever since the Doctor regenerated as a woman, there’s been the possibility that she’d be queer, as most of the recent Doctors have had some sort of romantic relationship with their companions. And now, we’ve finally gotten that queer moment we wanted.
The big moment came in the episode “Eve of the Daleks,” where the Doctor, Yaz, and Dan are stuck in a time loop. In one moment, Dan sees the way Yaz is looking at the Doctor and asks “you ever told her?” Yaz gets a dreamy look on her face and says, “I’ve never told anyone, not even myself.”
Later in the episode, Dan continues his meddling, and tells the Doctor, “she likes you.” When the Doctor says she likes Yaz too, he emphasizes, “no, I mean she *likes* you.” At first, the Doctor brushes it off, but by the end of the episode, the way she’s looking at Yaz seems to confirm that the feelings go both ways.
This should have queer Doctor Who fans jumping for joy. As soon as the Doctor regenerated as a woman, there was the possibility that she’d enter a romantic relationship with one of her female companions, as that’s been a tried and true part of the series for years. In addition to that, Yaz and Thirteen have incredible chemistry together, and the two of them being in a relationship has been teased for years. It would’ve been a natural progression of the two character’s story.
But for many fans, it’s too little, too late. Whittaker’s time as the Doctor is about to come to an end, and Mandip Gill, who plays Yaz, is leaving as well. So the Doctor and Yaz won’t get much time to show their feelings.
Yaz has been the Doctor’s companion for nearly 30 episodes, and that they’re just exploring this relationship at the very end of their time together means we won’t get to see them together. There are only two more specials before the Doctor regenerates, and then Thirteen and Yaz will be forever separated.
The next Doctor Who special, “Legend of the Sea Devils” will premiere soon, with the final 13th Doctor special airing in late 2022.
