“I think the great thing about Horror Story is, like, you’re there when you can be there, you’re not there when you can’t be there."

Sarah Catherine Paulson is one of today’s greatest actors, and her roles in American Horror Story are a large part of that legacy.

Last year, we thought that we’d maybe seen the last of Paulson on the show in the American Horror Story: Double Feature season, and of course, our hearts were broken. But thanks to a new appearance on Evan Ross Katz’s Shut Up Evan podcast, we now know what it will take to bring her back to the show we love so much.

Back in September of last year, Paulson went on Watch What Happens Live and was asked by host Andy Cohen if she was going to keep doing seasons of AHS.

“I don’t know. It’s the first time in about three years where I don’t know. I think this is my last season of Horror Story, probably,” she said. “I mean, I don’t know.”

But as she points out in her new podcast appearance, she quickly followed that with, “Every time he comes to me with some wackadoodle-stoodle character I tend to be like, ‘Yes! Let’s do it!’ So I don't know. This is the first time, so we’ll see.”

It seems we might’ve been too quick to jump on that story, as now, Paulson is clarifying what she meant. “It’s so funny that that got picked up in a way, because what I said was ‘I think it will be my last one?’ but then I said, ‘The minute he calls me with an idea, I’m always like, so excited,’” she told Katz on the podcast.

“Where’s my head at?” she continued, “I have that show to thank for, really, my career. It’s how everything started to take a turn in a direction that led to more opportunities for me, so it’s hard to say never to that one.”

Paulson also mentioned that she had recently taken a year off from the show, skipping the 1984 season, so she’s not afraid to take some time off and then come back stronger than ever on the show.

“I think the great thing about Horror Story is, like, you’re there when you can be there, you’re not there when you can’t be there, you’re there, you’re there, you’re not, you’re there, and that is kind of a beautiful thing. So I will never say ‘never” and it will always feel like a home to me and I feel incredibly lucky to have been a part of it.”

So there you have it, she’s never saying ‘never,’ and all Murphy has to do is come up with another bonkers character (or two) for her to play in the next season, and she’ll be there. The ball is in your court, Mr. Murphy. You can hear the conversation at about the 1 hour 19 minute mark in the podcast.
