Was Glee cursed?

Discovery+ and ID have released the first trailer for their upcoming three-part docuseries exploring some of the tragedies that happened behind the scenes on Fox’s hit teen drama musical Glee.

The Price of Glee explores the “endless scandals, tabloid gossip, and fatal tragedies” that plagued the show’s young stars.

“In May 2009, 10 young actors made their TV debut on Glee,” the trailer ominously says. “By 2020, all of them would be famous. And three of them would be dead.”

The series will focus on three main stories: the deaths of Cory Monteith, Mark Salling, and Naya Rivera. “I don’t want to say the ‘c’ word, the curse word, but that’s where your mind goes,” one person says in the trailer.

Those close to Monteith shed light on demons that haunted him during his rise to fame, which led to an overdose when he was just 31. People who worked with Salling talk about the shock of discovering he had child pornography and then hearing of his suicide at age 35. Naya Rivera’s father, George, talks about her personal life and journey before she drowned in a lake.

While the series doesn’t seem to feature interviews with any of the cast or main crew, it does feature relatives and friends of Glee cast members, set decorators, hairdressers, stylists, and publicists who worked on the show, and entertainment reporters who covered the series.

Glee was a once-in-a-generation cultural phenomenon that bravely pushed up against social norms and generated groundbreaking discussions around sexuality, race, disability and family. Each music-filled week brought joy to so many people, but sadly, even one of the happiest shows on television couldn’t escape the dark underbelly of Hollywood and the frenzy of burgeoning social media,” Jason Sarlanis, President of Crime and Investigative Content, Linear and Streaming said in a statement. “While celebrating the show’s indelible mark on pop culture and its unprecedented success, The Price of Glee takes a hard look at the intense pressure that results from being catapulted into superstardom and sheds new light on the terrible tragedies that befell the cast and crew of Glee.”

The Price of Glee debuts on ID and Discovery+ January 16. Watch the trailer below.
