Leighton hive, we won!
Even more stories are coming out of Essex College.
The same day HBO dropped the final two episodes of the season, The Sex Lives of College Girls has been renewed for season three.
As the title suggests, the comedy series follows "four 18-year-old freshman roommates at Essex College in Vermont. A bundle of contradictions and hormones, these sexually active college girls are equal parts lovable and infuriating." Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, Reneé Rapp, and Alyah Chanelle Scott star in the series produced by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble.
Suzanna Makkos, EVP of Original Comedy and Adult Animation at HBO Max, praised the series in a press release. "Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble continue to brilliantly capture the college experience in the most entertaining and relatable way. This series is the perfect balance of comedy, sex, curiosity, and chaos, and we can’t wait to see what the next season brings."
This is great news for LGBTQ+ fans of the show! Rapp plays the show's queer character Leighton, who Out has previously discussed with Noble, the showrunner.
In season one, fans watched "Leighton grapple with her sexuality, creating a firm divide between her college life and her romantic life. In college, she dates men and exudes a cool confidence other girls envy. Behind closed doors, she hooks up with women via dating apps and loathes herself for being queer. This all changes when her two worlds collide in the final episode, and she finally says the words she’s tried so persistently to deny: 'I’m gay.'"
Noble, who is gay, was proud to bring the story (partly based on his own life) to the show. "I’ve seen so many coming out stories where it’s about parents who are religious and won’t accept them… and yes those [stories] are absolutely true. But for me, the more interesting thing is the universal experience where you have to come to terms with it yourself."
According to Deadline, "the second season has been the top performing HBO Max original" since its premiere on November 21. Season three will likely premiere next fall.
