The actor told The New York Times being gendered “isn’t something I particularly like.”
Bella Ramsey first graced the silver screen at the tender age of 11 as Lyanna Mormont on HBO’s Game of Thrones. They are also currently starring in the long-awaited HBO adaptation of The Last of Us, a post-apocalyptic drama series based on a 2013 video game of the same name.
While promoting the upcoming show, Ramsey sat down for an interview with The New York Times where they said their gender has “always been very fluid.”
“Someone would call me ‘she’ or ‘her’ and I would think about it, but I knew that if someone called me ‘he’ it was a bit exciting,” they said, also stating they opt for the nonbinary option on a form whenever they have the opportunity. “I’m very much just a person.”
Ramsey is also nominated for a Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer, which they said was “pleasing” to be nominated in a gender-neutral category.
“Being gendered isn’t something that I particularly like,” they said. “But in terms of pronouns, I really couldn’t care less.”
Ramsey takes on the role as beloved protagonist Ellie in The Last of Us, and early reviews of their performance are hailed as “simply electrifying.” Ellie is a tenacious teenager fighting for survival. In the games, we discover she is also a lesbian.
Ellie is one of a few LGBTQ+ characters in the show, which will also feature the tragic romantic couple Bill and Frank, played by Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett. Although the sexuality of Ellie has yet to be revealed, Euphoria star Storm Reid taking the role of Riley Abel indicates that the teenage same-sex romance explored in the 2014 video game expansion The Last of Us: Left Behind may be explored.
Regardless, viewers are guaranteed an entire hour dedicated to the love story of Bill and Frank, which Bartlett has described as “beautifully written.”
The Last of Us airs Sundays on HBO and HBO Max, and currently has a 96 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
