On Friday, Jan. 5, a brand-new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race is only getting started!
Megami, Nymphia Wind, and Plane Jane sat down for an interview with Out and talked about their experiences while filming Drag Race and after being announced as contestants for season 16. A lot of tea was spilled, let’s just say that!
Megami
Megami has extensive experience in cosplay, and she believes that this will be advantageous for her while competing on Drag Race. “As a cosplayer, you really can't go to Party City and find a costume for some obscure character and some weird anime,” she explained. “You have to learn how to make things yourself, which really taught me how to make clothes and how to make props. Obviously, that’s a huge part of drag and a huge part of Drag Race. So I’m grateful that I have that experience.
Nymphia Wind
This is the 16th season of Drag Race, which is commemorating 15 years of the show on TV. Nymphia Wind is very aware of this milestone and feels the responsibility of delivering a great season to the fans.
“I feel very, very honored to be a part of the cast of season 16 because everyone is just so talented,” Nymphia said. “You know, sometimes you watch a season and you’re like, ‘I feel like if I were in that season, I would slay all the other girls.’ So you kind of have this kind of mentality where you’re going to slay the other girls going into season 16. And let me tell you: the first runway, I was dying. I was like, ‘What the hell? Everyone looks so good. This is going to be so hard!’ Which it was. It was very intense. It was a war.”
Plane Jane
Plane Jane received angry messages from the Drag Race fandom after making a joke in her Meet The Queens video that some fans interpreted as throwing shade at Katya, one of the most beloved Drag Race queens of all time.
“Honestly, Katya is probably one of my favorite queens from the franchise. Of course it was all light shade,” Plane clarified. “ I think I definitely got a healthy dose of what this fan base is about, what they have in store. They’re very serious and defensive about the queens that they love, and I don’t blame anybody for jumping to Katya’s defense.”
She added, “Maybe, perhaps, if I was less mature and wise in my years, I would do the same. But no, I’m a very sarcastic person. I hope that, going forward, people truly understand the nuance of my sarcasm. I do really adore Katya. I just want to put that on record.”
