There are already a few we stan hard.
Mathew RodriguezSo, there’s good news and there’s bad news. The good news is: there will be a ton of new shows and films to dive into on Apple’s brand new streaming service, Apple TV Plus, a Netflix/Hulu/Amazon rival the tech giant announced earlier today. The bad news, there doesn’t seem to be a ton of explicitly queer content in its initial slate, though we hold out hope that they can course correct down the line.
Having said that, while there’s nothing out-and-proud on the slate, there sure is a lot to pique your curiosity, including upcoming projects featuring Reese Witherspoon, Octavia Spencer, and Brie Larson. Here’s a guide to some of the content we’re most looking forward to.
Untitled Morning Show Drama
Apple announced this series in November 2017 and a still featuring two of the show’s stars, Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, made it into the Apple TV Plus presentation. The show stars Aniston, Witherspoon, Steve Carell, Gugu Mbatha-Raw (of Netflix’s Black Mirror: San Junipero) and others in a show based on the book Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV. The show is helmed by Kerry Ehrin, who created Bates Motel.
Central Park
The creators of Bob’s Burgers are back with an animated musical starring (wait for it) Leslie Odom, Jr., Daveed Diggs, Kristen Bell, Stanley Tucci, Tituss Burgess, and Kathryn Hahn. Our bodies are ready.
Are You Sleeping?
Octavia Spencer stars in a show produced by Reese Witherspoon (we already stan), a true crime thriller that examines our national obsession with … well, true crime shows and podcasts.
Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day Project
Though It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia doesn’t always pop into people’s heads on the list of queer shows, it demonstrated how how narratives can deal with a character’s coming out using heart and humor. A new series from McElhenny and Murray is a half-hour comedy set in a studio that creates video games. It also stars Community’s Danny Pudi.
Dickinson
Hailee Steinfeld (whose masturbation anthem, “Love Myself should be on all your bop playlists) stars in a comedy about the origins of (totally queer) Emily Dickinson.
Brie Larson Project
Brie Larson stars as a CIA operative in a show based on the true-life adventures of an actual CIA agent in a show from one of the producers of A Star Is Born.
My Glory Was I Had Such Friends
Announced in December, this show reunited Jennifer Garner with J.J. Abrams, the team behind the ABC hit Alias. The show is an adaption of the memoir with the same title, which follows a group of supportive woman who helped Silverstein while she waited for a second life-saving heart transplant.
Little Voice
Speaking of J.J. Abrams, he’ll also bring this New York City-set romantic drama featuring the original songs of Sara Bareilles to the streaming service.
Untitled Jon M. Chu Project
From Jon M. Chu, the director of Crazy Rich Asians, comes a mystery show featuring Brooklynn Prince, the breakout star of The Florida Project, who plays a young detective.
Amazing Stories
Though Spielberg is not a fan of Netflix, he is apparently a fan of Apple TV Plus, as evidenced by his rebooting of his 1980s anthology series. He’s working with the creators of ABC’s Once Upon a Time to bring the fantasy series to life.
See
Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard star in a drama about what would have happened if every country had continued funding their projects to get to space. (Space is inherently queer, so …) Francis Lawrence, who directed The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, will direct.
Defending Jacob
This thriller doesn’t sound super queer, but it stars Chris Evans, the internet’s boyfriend. So there’s that.
On the Rocks
Sofia Coppola directs and produces this film with Rashida Jones and Bill Murray as a father/daughter pair who go on an adventure in New York City.
Hala
This film, about a young Muslim girl raised in a conservative home, screened at Sundance and was executive produced by Jada Pinkett Smith.
A Movie Directed by Damien Chazelle
That’s it, that’s the project.
