Nobody asked for this but I love it??
Harron WalkerSo, big news! Two big news, in fact. First up, Rocko’s Modern Life is coming back! Second big news? It’s going to feature a “prominent trans story arc!”
This Friday, Netflix will premiere Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling — a 45-minute television special that will continue the truly unhinged ‘90s Nickelodeon cartoon classic, which hasn’t aired a new episode since 1996. Here’s a clip from the super meta episode where Rocko and friends get involved in the sick, sad world of professional animation and make a cartoon-within-a-cartoon about deli meats and cheeses called Wacky Delly. It’ll give you a good sense of the show’s tone and sensibility, if not, um, anything else.
Anyway, Static Cling will reunite everyone as Rock, Heffer, and Filburt go on a quest to track down Mr. and Mrs. Bighead’s son, Ralph, who ran off on a journey of “self-discovery,” according to Entertainment Weekly. Once they find yon Bighead progeny, they learn that she has transitioned and now goes by Rachel. Into it!
“I really started latching onto the idea of change and how society has changed and what’s going on in the last 20 years and the development of our characters and how they would react to change,” series creator Joe Murray, who voices Rachel, told EW, adding that his team consulted with GLAAD on how best to handle this narrative. “It felt natural, because it was not only about change, about somebody finding who they are and making that courageous choice to go through that change.”
Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling hits Netflix on Friday. Watch the trailer below.
