Organizations like GLAAD count how many LGBTQ+ characters appear in films and television every year but sometimes we forget its a lot more than just numbers. Now, a new docu-series executive produced by Wanda Sykes and Wilson Cruz will delve into the real meaning behind these figures.
Titled Visible: Out on Television, the new show was created by filmmakers Ryan White and Jessica Hargrave. It, according to Variety, “investigates the importance of TV as an intimate medium that has shaped the American conscience, and how the LGBTQ movement has shaped television." And it’s brought on some heavy hitters to tell that story.
Janet Mock, Margaret Cho, Neil Patrick Harris, Asia Kate Dillon and Lena Waithe are all narrating the series, which comes in five parts — they will likely each take on an episode. In addition to their voices, the hour-long episodes will also include interviews with the likes of Ellen DeGeneres, Oprah Winfrey, Anderson Cooper, Billy Porter, Rachel Maddow, John Lemon, Sara Ramirez, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and more. Talk about some of the biggest LGBTQ+ names working?!
All of this footage will come paired with archival footage as well, to truly illustrate how far we’ve come. “Watch the revolution,” a tag line reads. Homophobia, invisibility, and the evolution of characters will all be explored according to Paste.
The project will debut on February 14, 2020 on Apple TV Plus. White and Hargrave will join Sykes and Cruz as executive producers.
Sykes’ standup special Not Normal, is currently streaming on Netflix and is nominated for a Critics Choice award.
