Fresh off of a Tony nomination for his role in Jeremy O. Harris’ Slave Play, actor James Cusati-Moyer is joining the all-star cast of Netflix’s upcoming limited series Inventing Anna. The show revolves around New York City con artist Anna Delvey.

Inventing Anna is a ten episode series made by Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes as a part of her landmark deal with Netflix. It’s based on Jessica Pressler’s viral New York Magazine article about Delvey, real name Anna Sorokin, a 28-year-old woman who pretended to be a German heiress to become an insider in elite New York circles and ended up conning rich New Yorkers out of over $200,000.

Sorokin became something of an anti-folk hero after the article went viral, with readers across the country becoming fascinated by the scandalous tale of an outsider so easily gaining access to New York City’s elite inner circles. Sorokin is currently serving a prison sentence of 4 to 12 years for her crimes.

Cusati-Moyer plays Val in the show, a stylist and fashion director who befriends Anna and gets to see the havok she wreacked in person. Julia Garner (Ozark) will play the scam artist Delvey, and Anna Chlumsky (Veep), Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black), Katie Lowes (Scandal), and Alexis Floyd (The Bold Type) round out the cast. Rhimes serves as creator, writer, and executive producer, alongside Betsy Beers. The series will be directed by The Devil Wears Prada’s David Frankel.

Cusati-Moyer and his Slave Play co-star Ato Blankson-Wood were both nominated for Tonys last week for their roles as a gay couple. The show received a total of 12 Tony nominations, a record for a play. He’s also appeared in television shows like Prodigal Son, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Blue Bloods.
