It's a half-hour "traumedy" and we can't wait.
Mikelle StreetRyan O'Connell is adding to his schedule. While the second season of his hit Netflix show Special is headed back into production, he's already working on something else.
According to Deadline, HBO Max has put in a development order for Accessible, which is written by O'Connell. The project is slated to be a 30-minute "traumedy" that centers around a 15-year-old girl named Clare who has recently been in an accident. The accident has left Clare with disabilities and she is being forced to attend a boarding school for others with disabilities.
"There, she discovers the usual teenage dilemmas of sex, love, and friendship are even more complicated in a wheelchair,"Deadline reports. "It’s like if a John Hughes movie had a handicapped orgy, per producers." Well then.
O'Connell is set to serve as an executive producer alongside Jim Parsons and Todd Spiwak via their company That's Wonderful Productions. Parsons was notably behind O'Connell's Special. In 2015, when he was honored on our Out100 list, O'Connell described Parsons as a mentor. At the time he also said that"putting a gay disabled character on TV is my number one dream,"which he did with Special. There's no news on whether there are queer storylines within Accessible.
Outside of these projects, O'Connell has had quite the year writing for television shows like MTV's Awkward, Will & Grace, as well as The Babysitters Club for Netflix. He's also won a GLAAD award and an HRC award.
